What is the Alexa Ranking?
This is arankingmethod set by alexa.com that mainly audits and makes open the frequency of visits on Websites. The algorithm of Alexa traffic ranking iseasy.
Alexa ranking systemis based on the level of traffic each web site get from the people who visit a web site with Alexa toolbar installed.
Alexa.com offers a search engine, a directory and a toolbar (among other services). It also has a resource called Alexa Traffic Rankings(click the traffic rankings tab at the top when you get to Alexa.com), which is what we are focusing on when we study Alexa Rank.
You can input any domain name into the traffic rankings form and Alexa will spit out the current ranking data for that site.
Some of Alexa’s most notable previous activities include providing a database that served as the basis for the creation of theWayback Machine and the creation of various search facilities (now largely discontinued).
However, the thing they’re probably best known for is, of course, their ‘Alexa Rank’ – a metric that ranks websites in order of popularity or ‘how [well] a website is doing’ over the last 3 months.
In simple terms, Alexa Traffic Rankis a rough measure of a website’s popularity, compared with all of the other sites on the internet, taking into account both the number of visitors and the number of pages viewed on each visit.
Alexa’s Traffic Ranks are based on the traffic data provided by users in Alexa’s global data panel over a rolling 3 month period. Traffic Ranks are updated daily. A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure ofUnique Visitors and Page views.
Unique Visitors are determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Page views are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site.
However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single Pageview.
This is a ranking system set byalexa.com(a subsidiary ofamazon.com) that basically audits and makes public the frequency of visits on various Web sites. The algorithm according to which Alexa traffic ranking is calculated, is simple. It is based on the amount of traffic recorded from users that have the Alexa toolbar installed over a period of three months. This traffic is based on such parameters as reach and page views. The reach refers to the number of Alexa users who visit a particular site in one day. Page view, as its name shows, is the number of times a particular page (URL) is viewed by Alexa users. Alexa.com makes it clear though that, if a particular user visits the same URL multiple times on the same day, all those visits will be counted as one.
The first step of the ranking process is calculating the reach and number of page views for all the sites on the Web on a daily basis. The Alexa ranking is obtained by performing the geometric mean of reach and page views, averaged over a predefined period of time (three months).
